Research symposium held for first-ever Center for Asian Integrity
The Office of the Ombudsman, in coordination with the Asian Development Bank, Griffith University and the University of the Philippines conducted a research symposium recently for the Center for Asian Integrity (CAI), Asia-Pacific’s first regional anti-corruption university.

Ombudsman Ma. Merceditas N. Gutierrez led the opening of the symposium, which aims to generate ideas for the initial research agenda of CAI, at the Discovery Suites in Pasig City.
International research experts from Australia and Cambodia participated in the symposium, as well as key sectoral representatives from the academe, civil society, donor agencies and the government.
A group of observers from the Office of the Ombudsman and the UP-National College of Public Administration and Governance (UP-NCPAG) were also present.
Major discussion on the said symposium focused on the identification of the most pressing governance issues and the appropriate kinds of research to address these concerns. Foreign participants also gave comparative perspectives on various research methods and anti-corruption initiatives.
The symposium is co-hosted by the Asian Development Bank Institute (ADBI) and in collaboration with Griffith University’s International Institute for Public Ethics, the Australian Governance Research Network and the Institute for Ethics, Governance and Law (IEGL).
The CAI was launched last 27 August 2008 through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed among Ombudsman Gutierrez, Prof. Charles Sampford of the Griffith University – IEGL, and Prof. Alex Brillantes of the UP–NCPAG, which, in effect, established the Consortium of said academic institutions.
